HAENSLI CUP THIS WEEKEND

Seventy skiers, including the New Zealand ski team, are expected to compete in the Steinlager and Haensli Cups at Whakapapa next weekend. The Haensli Cup race is expected to be held on the Haensli Face, providing there is more snow, says Scott Lee, the marketing director for Whakapapa.

The Haensli Cup has been held since 1953 and is one of the most prestigious races held on Mt Ruapehu, according to Mr Lee. It is sponsored by the second-ever ski instructor at the Chateau who was instrumental in erecting the Ruapehu Alpine Lifts. Mr Haensli now lives in Switzerland but keeps in contact with Whakapapa by sponsoring this cup.
