Successful grading session
Thirty children and eight adults took part in the Whanake Rangataua Karate Shotokan grading session at National Park on Wednesday with everyone gaining their next belt. Children as young as six-years-old took part in the grading session. They were graded by Charles Mareikura, of Ohakune. After a vigorous warm up the pupils performed kata (patterned movements) and kumite (free fighting). Prior to the grading night, pupils sat a theory exam and a practical test.
Grading sessions are held every six months in the area. Whanake Rangataua Karate has been established in the Waimarino for two years. There are now all grades in the club, from beginners to black belts. New gradings for club members were as follows: Junior probationary black belt: Mario Mareikura (O). Junior green belt 3rd kyu: Corban Tumataroa (O), Lee Akapita (0) 8yrs. Junior orange belt 4th kyu: Frank Taylor (O) 8yrs, Robert Taylor (O). junior yellow belt 5th kyu: Desmond Chung (O), Peter Muscott (NP), Emerson Rewi (O). Junior white belt 3 red tabs 6th kyu: Duane Jacobs (NP), Tahn Brown (NP) 8yrs, Hare Rewi (O), Carl Ram (O), Aaron Ram (O), T racey Williams (NP) 9yrs.
Junior white belt 2 red tabs 7th kyu: Serahn Jacobs (NP), Awhina Edwards (NP), Terry Taumata (O), Che Wilson (O), Matthew Mareikura (O), Eugenie Rapana (O). Junior white belt 1 red tab 8th kyu: Ngaoma Wihapi (O), Kenneth Hawera (O), Tohi Rewi (O) 7yrs, Edward Pickery (O), Michael Wihapi (O) 8yrs, Raana Ellen Mareikura (O) 6yrs. Junior white belt 9th kyu: Rachael Akapita (O) 6yrs. Senior blue belt 2nd kyu: Alex Holes (NP). Senior green belt 3rd kyu: Kevan Lind (NP). Senior- orange belt 4th kyu: Dianne Legge (NP), Aroha Mareikura (O). Senior yellow belt 5th kyu: Brian Oliver(O). Senior white belt 2 red tabs 7th kyu: Agnes Mareikura (O), Pare Billington (NP). Senior white belt 1 red tab 8th kyu: Alex Eaglan(O).
