Thirty years ago

Construction company employees were moving timber stacks this week thirty years ago to allow the erection of a boundary fence at the Waiouru Primary School. A mechanical hole digger was in operation drilling holes for the fence's posts at a rate of four per minute. Manipulated by two men the machine was a great labour saving device and caused a great interest among the many boys in the neighbourhood after school J hours.

The school's staff members were expecting playgound supervision to be a much easier task when the fencing work was completed. ★ ★ ★ Mrs R. W. Jones conducted the August meeting of the Raetihi Country Women's Institute, and welcomed a good attendance of members and visitors. For the roll call members brought one ounce of tea and an ounce of sugar towards future afternoon teas. Mrs L. A. Eastman was again the lucky winner of the mystery parcel and several members received a gift

from the 'birthday box\ amid musical honours. Mr C. . Pilgrim, field organiser for the Institute for the Blind, spoke on the great work of the Institute and explained the reasons for depending on local orgnisations to canvas for funds. After some discussion it was decided to bring new and used clothing to the next meeting to help the Save the Children Fund. Competition results were: Premier Flower, 1st Mrs J. Heise, 2nd Mrs J. Sommerville, 3rd Mrs I. Thompson. Eggless Sponge, 1st Mrs P. Godfrey, 2nd Mrs I. Berry, 3rd Mrs A. Awburn. Knit-

ted Bootees: 1st Mrs Sommerville, 2nd Mrs Thompson, 3rd Mrs Berry. Guest speaker for the afternoon was the district nurse Miss Begg, who was able to give members some idea of the public health service in a most interesting way. She described several of the immunisation injections available and described the various jobs she carries out over a very wide area and the way in which the district nurse is relied on in an emergency. Mrs Jones thanked the nurse and gave her flowers.
