Youth for Christ team to visit college

Students at Ruapehu College will be in for a special treat on Thursday 22nd August, when the Youth for Christ Y-One team will visit the school and hold a special assembly.

Y-One ^5 is a multimedia roadshow put together by Youth for Christ to tour New Zealand for six months. In schools, churches and public rallies, it tackles issues faced by teenagers and offers an alternative in the Christian message. Y-One also appears on the Sunday television show The Herd'. The team consists of

eighteen young people drawn from all over New Zealand and their repertoire includes contemporary music, dance, drama, a threescreen audio-visual display and an original musical. The main message is the meaning of love, which comes through their programmes, and explores the different aspects of love, such as sex, race relations, family acceptance and ambition.

Y-One's dramas were written mostly by team members themselves, for special application in high school liberal studies classes. Many school principals have commented on the high quality of Y-One's material and its relevance to the New Zealand high schooler. Y-One's nine member band offers a wide range of musical styles from both secular and gospel artists. Many of their songs are choreographed for the evening rally programme. Y-One's team members range in age from 17 to 27 and come from a variety of

backgrounds, giving up their careers or studies to be in the team full-time for one year. They're expected to contribute to all aspects of the programme from making props and sewing costumes to writing dramas and leading discussions in schools. They also help fund the tour as well as arranging their own financial support. All their performances are free. After the special assembly in the college on Thursday 22nd August, the Youth for Christ Y-One team will remain in Ohakune and do a special rally that evening also at the college, This rally will be open to everyone and it is hoped young people from Raetihi and Waiouru will make the trip to see it. The evening rally is being arranged as a joint venture between all the local churches under the auspices of Youth for Christ, Wanganui.
