Girls can do anything!

This poem, written by Mr Alf Rainford, is about a group of 27 Ohakune ladies who spent three days canoeing the Wanganui River earlier this year. The rhyme was written by Mr Rainford on behalf of the guides who looked after the ladies during the canoe trip. Mr Rainford has recently had a book of rhymes published. Here's to the women of 'Kune, Who paddled the Wanganui. Sometimes like .his But mostly like tips And the view from the bottom was gloomy. The day dawned bright and sunny, As the guys looked cver the 'honey'. Bob. Alex and Mike Would set the girls right In fact they would get real chummy. Val and Pat were the first. And gave a magnificent burst. But their boat turned turtle And their shouts were a gurgle And prepared the girls for the worst. And Marge kept yelling to Mike To dodge the logs and the like Mike! Over here! Mike! Over there! Paddle Mike, paddle Mike, Mike!! Well Mike had to even the score The shouting had made him quite sore His mean face was set As he started the jet And drowned Marge out with its roar. The trip had been long and exerting And gone was the laughter and flirting. Seven hours in all We were ready to fall But the thought of John Coull kept us working. Gay and Diane looked a treat And swept the boys off their feet. And a pink straw hat Kept Gwen in the act, And made our party complete. Four girls weren't 'working to rule', And treated the guys very cool, Their bouts of seclusion Soon brought our intrusion But we can't tell tales out of school. So here's to the girls and the trip, May you long continue to drip And please keep in touch 'Cos we love you so much And we're honoured to captain your ship.
