Fed. Farmers reconsidering support

The Waimarino branch of Federated Farmers is to consider whether it should continue with its

support for local shearing competitions now that competition rules have been changed. The changes were made to increase the speed of shearing, but they have also lowered the quality of wool, claims Mr Doug Bennett,

Chairman of the Waimarino branch of Federated Farmers. Under the new rules, competition shearers are now permitted to leave the belly wool of the sheep until shearing the last side so it will drop into the clean white wool. This can stain the fleece some farmers claim, and downgrades the wool. The Wool Board has withdrawn its support from

shearing competitions because of the change in rules. The Wool Board previously supplied judges and personnel for shearing competitions. The Waimarino branch of Federated Farmers contributes nearly $100 per year towards prize money and it is this financial help which would be cut off if the branch decides to withdraw its support from shearing competitions.
