Getting ready for the winter season
Currently busy preparing for the winter season are Brian and Tracey Peters, who operate a pony trekking business at Waipuna Farms, just south of Waiouru.
The Peters have 14 horses and use them for guided bush treks over their farm. Their daughter June also gives riding lessons to visitors to the area, and to locals. The horse trekking business has now been operating for almost a year, but this winter the Peters' are
attempting to attract a larger number of winter sports enthusiasts who come to the region to ski. "We are hoping the skiers will be interested in having a go at riding a horse too," said Mr Peters.
On guided treks riders are taken through native bush and tussock country, to an
altitude of 3,200 feet. For people who don't like the idea of riding on top ofa horse, the Peters offer the option of riding behind the animals in a wagon. In addition to the horses, the Peters keep sheep, rabbits — which are bred for
meat and as pets — goats and deer on their 2,000 acre farm.
