Thirty years ago

At its meeting held this week thirty years ago, the Raetihi School Committee received the resignation of Miss Legge, who planned to retire from teaching at the end of the term.

Committee members spoke very highly of the work performed by Miss Legge for a great number of years at the Raetihi School, where she was infant mistress. ★ ★ ★ In the budget estimates, expenditure on Tongariro National Park was provided

in the sum of £159,000. It was estimated that £1 19,500 would be required for the Chateau, huts etc, operating expenses, including furniture, repairs and compensation to workmen. New buildings and improvements were estimated to require £39,500.

The amount voted in the previous year — 1 954 — was £122,250- and the amount expended £142,232. ★ ★ ★ Work had begun in Camp Road, Waiouru on the installation of street lighting. When Mr R. E. Jack, MP for the district, announced recently that the lack of street lights in the housing area was to be rectified in the near future, people thought it would naturally be a few months before the wheels began to turn. So they had a pleasant surprise ' when the work began so promptly. The project was expected to take three months. A contemporary newspaper commented, "With the completion of the street lighting people may start using the footpaths for the use for which they were intended instead of the roadways, as they do at present, where they are a menace both to themselves and the motorist." ★ ★ ★ Sunday 7th August was to herald the dawn of a very important day in the lives of

young children at Waiouru Military Camp, for on that day the new kindergarten was to be officially opened Invitations to attend the ceremony were sent to all members of the association, to the parents of children enrolled at the kindergarten and to all other interested parties. Great changes had been made to the interior of the building to be used for the kindergarten. ★ ★ ★ In the forthcoming spring it was proposed to start a district pony club with branches at Karioi, Orautoha, Raetihi and possibly Ohakune. Three classes of membership were to be available; senior (21 years or overU intermediate(17 to21 years)] and junior (under 17). The club planned to attract 1 interested members to help with the club's activities, as well as active members. It was stated at the time that the proposed new pony club would do much to revive and stimulate the apparently declining interest in horsemanship in the district.
