Ohakune Borough Council briefs
The Ohakune Borough Council has changed its policy which allowed new streets only to be named
after trees. Cr. Mike Wiggins asked the council to change the policy. At the last monthly public meeting Cr. Wiggins said it was now hard for developers to find a new tree name which was pronounceable. The council unanimously agreed to Cr. Wiggins' motion. It will now accept suggestions from developers for street names, but will retain the final decision on the naming of streets. Also at last week's meeting, the council agreed to the main street of the Miro Park development being named Park Avenue. Miro Park developer, Mr Paul Scarf, had earlier indicated that he preferred Miro Park Drive as his first choice
and Park Lane as his second. Park Drive had also been considered, but Mr Scarf felt that as it was also the name of a brand of cigarette, it might detract from what his company was trying to achieve in Miro Park. ★ ★ ★ Cr. Bully Hays has resigned as chairman of the
council's finance and administration committee due to failing eyesight. Despite his health problems, Cr. Hays stated that he was still willing to serve on the council as he felt he still has a great deal to offer. Cr. Snow Brannigan was elected unopposed as Cr. Hays' replacement as chairman of the committee.
