Waimarino club wins S & G squash trophy

The Waimarino Squash club won the Security and General Trophy at the inter-club teams tournament last weekend. Teams from Turangi, Taumarunui and Taihape travelled to Raetihi to take part in the tournament, which was being held for the first time. Teams of five women and five men competed for the trophy. Local representative for Security and General, Mr Lance Langdon, says the competition will become an annual event. "The Trophy will give the teams something to compete for," he says.

Waimarino and Taihape teams both gained 35 points, Turangi 32 and Taumarunui 28. However, the Waimarino team won on a count back, which means that individual game scorepoints are counted. Waimarino's total points; were 554 compared to Taihape's 510. Members of the winniiu' team were: Ladies; Aroha Irwin, Lesley Todd, Christine Hawira, Carol Leary and Joy Crowley. Men; Ross Gillet, Greg Whyte, Phil Jackson who was injured and replaced by Graeme Irwin, Keith Leary and D'Arcy Newson.
