Book promotion at Ruapehu College

The Ruapehu College English department, in conjunction with the school library, is involved in a book promotion scheme at the college. At present most students are involved in a reading contest, in promoting books of their own choice through reviews, and in producing posters to emphasise the importance of books. Several students are also reviewing recent fictional releases for later publication by the school library service. The focal point of all this is a display of new books in the school library. These books are provided by a number of retail outlets and the display runs from today, Tuesday 9th July, through to Tuesday 16th July. During this time all students are being given the opportunity to browse - through the books and it is hoped that many, either as individuals or groups of various sorts, will purchase some of the display books and present them to the library. This will help ease the burden on the library budget that is stretched to the limit at present trying to provide

new and stimulating reading material in these days of high prices. It must be noted that many of the books are at bargain prices. It is hoped that parents will support this scheme as well and the books will be displayed on the senior parent night at the college on July 1 1th.

In fact, the library has already received donations specifically directed at the purchase of some of these books. In addition the school is also to witness performances by a Maori drama group, 'Te Ohu Whakaari', on Wednesday 10th July. This Wellington-based group is presenting two

programmes that include original material as well as dramatisations of short stories and poetry by writers such as Patricia Grace and Apirana Taylor. It is hoped to heighten students awareness of books through these activities and to assist the library in providing stimulating material for those who use it.
