Thirty years ago

Ideal snow conditions and improved facilities for visitors combined to produce what promised to be a record season for Ruapehu's winter playground, this week thirty years ago. Growing crowds of weekenders and holidaymakers were flocking to the Chateau Tongariro. Last weekend saw crowds thronging the slopes of the mountain, particularly the Staircase where the T-bar tow was operating. This, and the chairlift, carried 5,000 skiers during the weekend. The T-bar tow had a queue of up to one hundred people at times. To help cater for visitors until the second chairlift was completed, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Ltd planned to erect two more lifts.

One to carry on above the T-bar tow, over the Nosedive and on to the Cinder Track, the other behind the Wanganui and Ruapehu Ski Clubs' lodges. This tow was to cater for learners and beginners. ★ ★ ★ It was with regret that the residents of the region heard the news of the passing of Mr C. Manson of Ohakune, this week in 1955. Mr Manson, a long-time resident of Ohakune, died in the Waimarino Hospital. ★ ★ ★ Miss Ennis, daughter of

the County Engineer, Mr Jack Ennis and Mrs Ennis, was spending a short holiday with her parents at Raetihi. * * * Mrs Henderson of Raetihi and Mrs Smith of Ore Ore had just returned home from a holiday at the Great Barrier Island, Auckland. ★ ★ ★ Entries for the Waimarino News Limerick Competition — for Limericks about the soon to be opened Raetihi pub — were flooding in. The entries included: The shearers all will rally round,

To shake hands with Mrs McGee, As she deals them out long shandies, In the pub at Raetihi. ★ ★ * The finest bit of fun, That ever you wish to see, Will be when they open the pub, In the town of Raetihi. ★ ★ ★ The Mayor and all the Councillors, And thousands from the scrub, Will be shaking hands and drinking, For hours down at the pub.
