Skiers hope, "Maybe this year"

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts staff, as well as skiers, are hoping for more snow this year. For the last two seasons there has been insufficient snow on the National

Downhill slopes to operate the new high capacity T-bar which was installed in 1983. The new T-bar brings the National Downhill's capacity up to 2400 skiers per hour, as much as the Knoll Ridge and Waterfall T-bars combined. The chairlift which leads to the National Downhill slopes has been upgraded to a double chairlift to cope with the expected influx of skiers wishing to use these slopes. A small rope-tow has also been installed above the new 1 T-bar to allow skiers to

traverse back to the top of the Waterfall T-bar, thus linking both sides of the Whakapapa slopes above the Top O' the Bruce. "The wide-open slopes of the National Downhill area are ideal for intermediates" said Scott Lee, P.R. spokesperson for Whakapapa. "RAL will be doing a lot of grooming in the area so intermediates can enjoy long uninterrupted runs. "The new T-bar haopened up a lot of ne\> terrain, we're all lookiiu forward to skiing there thr year."
