Custom car enthusiasts visit region
A dozen members of the Taumarunui Rod and Custom Club came to Ohakune last weekend to meet with members of the newly formed Ruapehu Car and Custom Club. The Taumarunui car enthusiasts met their Ruapehu Club hosts in the Summit Bar of the Ohakune
Hotel on Saturday. The visitors stayed the night at St. Joseph's Convent in Shannon Street and the following morning a party of the visitors were taken to the Waiouru Arimy Museum by the Ruapehu club's public relations' officer, Sven Elfstrom. Several _ of the visitors brought their custom cars to Ohakune, including Keith Quinton, the owner of a 1951 Mercury. The Mercury, which was lovingly restored by Keith over a seven year period,
was previously owned by the American Embassy in Wellington. As well as admiring each others cars, the club members held a barbecue, after which members of the Taumarunui club advised the Ruapehu club members on writing a club constitution. The Taumarunui club is a
member of the New Zealand Hot Rod Association and the National Street Roding Association, so its members have been of great assistance to the Ruapehu Club's founding ifiembers. The Ruapehu club is keen to attract new members — owning a custom car is not necessary before car enthusiasts can join.
