Make learning to ride a reality

Learning to ride a horse can become a reality in the Ruapehu region as there are several ponies in the district available for lease, states Mrs Nita Wilde of the Waimarino Pony Club. The subject of new and inexperienced riders was raised at the recent AGM of

the Waimarino Pony Club. Mrs Wilde added that due to the work done by dedicated and enthusiastic instructors, all members of the club have shown great improvement in their riding, with five D and four C certificates being awarded. Raetihi branch has a large group of young riders, one of whom is only four years of age, but new members are always welcome to both the Raetihi and Ohakune branches. Members from both Ohakune and Raetihi branches turned out for the AGM of the Waimarino Pony Club on Wednesday 12th June. Another active year has passed for members of both branches with regular weekly rallies and competitive events including games and ribbon days, one day events, cross country, show jumping, dressage days and gymkhanas. Riders have gained further experience by travelling to

Kaitieke and Taumarunui to compete in various events. In March, members were all saddened by the death of patron Mr Bob Tod who had done so much for the pony club movement over many, many years. Officers elected at the AGM were: patron, Mr A. Bowater; district commissioner, Mrs Evelyn Cooper; president, Mrs Claudia Mason; secretary treasurer, Mrs N. Wilde; King Country delegates, E. Cooper, C. McLean, C. Mason and N. Williams. ★ ★ * The Ohakune Pony Club may be in its yearly winter recess, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything happening in the club. Not every member will be able to get to the pony club championships, but pony club is for riders of all ages, abilities and financial status. One of the aims of the National Association is that one day a horsemastership

quiz will be run at a national level; how to' look after your horse or pony being just as important as how to ride it. National events have to start at local level, so from this year each area is being entouraged to run its own quiz. The Ohakune and Raetihi branches, making up the Waimarino Pony Club will be holding their contest on 27th July at the Anglican Church Hall, Raetihi with a pot-luck dinner tea at 5pm and the contest proper at 6pm. From the youngest to the oldest will be involved. No competition is complete without an audience, so come on Waimarino, be there to support your young equestrians. If you wish to compete contact E. Cooper or N. Williams of Raetihi, or Ohakune's new secretary, Sue Gibson.
