Civic reception for ski champs?
Mayor of Ohakune, Mr Bill Taylor, is to look into the possibility of holding a civic reception for skiers and officials who will be in town in September for the Subaru National Ski Championships.
At Thursday's full council meeting the Mayor said he lad been asked to speak at the championships' opening ceremony. He asked whether councillors considered the occasion justified the staging of a civic reception. Cr Mary Wright stated that ninety racers from all over the country would attend the races, along with friends and ski officials. Cr Mike Wiggins added that it was rare. for the Nationals to be stdged in the North Island. After hearing councillors' comments, the Mayor agreet to look into the matter further with a view to holding a civic reception.
The New Zealand Ski Association Subaru Nationals will be held at Turoa from 7th to 12th September and should attract the country's top skiers, as well as a number of overseas competitors. Top international skiers will be in the country to compete in the Europa ski series at Mount Hutt, Canterbury, which is a week after the Nationals at Turoa, "so there is a . chance they will come to Ohakune too," says Mrs Sue Allomes, secretary of the organising committee. The organising committee began preparing to stage the Nationals last September. Markus Hubrich, New Zealand skier of the year, will be taking part in the Nationals.
