Diet of worms for kiwi with no road sense

After hitting something on the road near Pipiriki on Saturday night, Raj Rain and his son Carl stopped their vehicle to find it was a kiwi. Mr Ram, a bush contractor with Winstone's Afforestation, took the stunned bird home for his wife to nurse back to health. Because it was the weekend, the Rams could not contact the Ranger Station, so fed the kiwi on worms. "We put him in a dark box and sometimes let him out on a wet piece of grass," said Mrs Joan Ram. "He has been very spoiled," she said, "The kids have been wrapping him up in blankets and doing all sorts of things to him." Waimarino wildlife ranger, Dave Johnson, says the kiwi is a young male and may be given to the Mt Bruce Native Bird Reserve in Eketahuna, a? they are currently looking for male kiwis. However, the bird may aso be released back into the wild near Pipiriki.
