WAG workshops
Rural Women's Day, for the women of the Ruapehu region, will be staged at Ruapehu College on Sunday 23rd June. Six workshops, covering subjects ranging from the care and use of small motors to the Matrimonial Property Act will be staged. The course has been organised by Elizabeth Mortland of the Rural Education Activities Programme in association with the Wanganui Regional Community College. The venture is a WAG course (Women in Agriculture). WAG was first
launched by Danna Glendining, rural activist and member of the National Advisory Council on the Empioyment of Women, who felt that it was time the role of women in agriculture was recognised. "Most people look at agriculture and see only men," she said, "The contribution women make is ignored or undervalued." Women don't have to be involved in agriculture to join the courses, however. "Everyone in Ohakune, Raetihi and the Waimarino is living in a rural situation," says Liz Mortland. Danna Glendining will open proceedings at the Rural Women's Day, and during the morning Jill Martin of Taihape will take a course on small motors — care and use, and Marina . Waller of the Parks' Board will take a landscaping workshop. After lunch (bring your own) Carol Hitchcock of Ohakune will take a workshop on herbs, Val Merwood of Taihape will speak on goat farming, Judith Jones on the Matrimonial Property Act and Diane Walker of Raetihi on the care of domestic animals. The enrolment fee for three of the workshops is $10.
