Divers back from camp
Two Raetihi divers, Karyn Philips and Sherilyn Condon are back home after a two week diving course with New Zealand's top coach, Merve Campbell. The course, held at the Centennial Baths in Hamilton, was attended by eleven other young divers from throughout the country. Sherilyn, who has been diving since she was eight, trained in Taumarunui every weekend for two years, but gave up last year when she started high school. When Sherilyn first dived at the Nationals three years ago, she finished 12th and 9th in the under 12 section. The following year she finished fourth in two events and this year, in the 13 and 14-year-old section, she finished third and fourth. Karyn began diving seriously at the end of last year. She is also a keen swimmer
and has been swimming competitively since she was 1 2. Last summer both girls trained every day for ihe Nationals which were held in March. Sherilyn and Karyn are both hoping the Raetihi pool will be covered which will enable them to train almost all year round. Sherilyn will be rejoining the Raetihi Diving Club next summer and training at the'pool. Previously she dived for the Waikato Club because of the better facilities and top class coaching she received. During the May Camp, the girls learnt more complicated dives such as full twists, back one and a halves and reverse one and a halves. They trained for four hours each day. Both girls are now looking forward to their diving camp in the August holidays.
