Five tries for Ohakune-Karioi

Ohakune-Karioi finally showed what its backline is capable of on Saturday when they ran the ball at every opportunity against Utiku to finish the day with five tries. . . .

The Utiku forwards played exceptionally well, throughout the match with Peter Stratton and Robbie Peed showing out as the work horses for the visitors. But the home side was not to be denied an impressive victory as they showed their championship potential to one of the smallest crowds this season. Lachlan Harding and Steve Gordon scored a try apiece to make the half-time score 8-0 to Ohakune. Harding featured again two minutes into the second half when he completed a slick back move to score in the corner. Four minutes later, captain Gordon grabbed his second try which was converted by L. Harding. Harding completed an outstanding match for Ohakune by scoring a penalty after 25 minutes, followed five minutes later by a try and conversion before rounding off the match with a drop goal shortly before full time. Utiku's only points came from first five eighth Dave Edwards when he kicked a drop goal after 32 minutes. Bulletin 'man of the match' award goes to Ohakune winger, Lachlan Harding who amassed 22 points on the day. Final score: OhakuneKarioi 30 - L. Harding 3, S. Gordon 2 tries, L. Harding 1 penalty, 2 conversions and 1 drop goal. Utiku 3 - D. Edwards, drop goal.
