Several burglaries occurred in Raetihi last Wednesday. Winstone Afforestation's office in Queen Street was broken into and about $50 in cash and a hand-held radio telephone were taken. ★ ★ ★ A video recorder valued at $2,000 was taken from a house in Duncan Street, when it was broken into between 6 and 1 1 pm on Wednesday. ★ ★ ★ A Bedford truck, the property of Raetihi Borough Council was unlawfully taken from Ameku Road on Wednesday. It was recovered near Te Kuiti on Thursday. A Mark II Cortina which was unlawfully taken from Wanganui on Wednesday was found 5km south of Raetihi on the same day. ★ ★ ★ Two stolen vehicles were also recovered in Waiouru during the week. A Mazda stolen from Napier was found in the town by police constable Mike Hemsley on Friday and a Mini stolen from Wellington was recovered earlier in the week. ★ ★ ★ Constable Hemsley also detained an escapee from the Rangipo Corrective Training Institute on Wednesday. Constable Hemsley said a passer-by saw the 18-year-old man hitch-hiking, then get into a truck. The truck was stopped by the constable and the man taken into custody.
