Crater Lake 'active'

A tremor of significant size was recorded on Mt. Ruapehu on Sunday. Park headquarters staff also witnessed a steam eruption on Monday morning. Park Ranger, Mr Paul Dale said that the earthquake recorded at the Crater Lake was "larger than normal." The thermal eruptions which were first noticed last Thursday are becoming more intense. Mr Dale said that Sunday's eruption had more

projection and intensity than previous ones. Mr Dale saw three eruptions of varying heights in about an hour and a half on Sunday. Today (Tuesday) DSIR experts from Taupo and Rotorua are making their regular two-monthly survey of the Lake. "It has been three years since there has been activity on the mountain," said Mr Dale "and last time it went on for several months, then stopped."
