Craft shop opens in National Park
The former TAB office in National Park was reopened last week — but this time as a craft and souvenir shop. The new venture has been launched by Mrs Carol Murcott, who has been painting and cleaning the premises with the help of her husband since they took it over several weeks ago.
The shop stocks Auck-land-made souvenirs, but also sells locally made craftwork. The locally-made items include carvings by National Park craftsman, Brian Towler. Carol hopes to sell cane-. work made by Waikune Prison inmates and T-shirts printed by Marie Scator of National Park.
The T-shirts will be printed with a view of Mt. Ruapehu. Stocking the shop with locally-made items is important to Carol — "We don't want the shop to be full of items bearing made in Japan stamps, we want to sell local items whenever possible." Kevin is employed by the National Park County, but will help out in the shop dur-
ing the evenings and weekends. The Murcotts decided to open their craft shop because they feel there is a real need in the area especially in the ski season. "Tourists come down here to spend money but they don't have anything to spend it on," says Kevin. "When the mountain is closed during the season there are about 2,000 people around the park with nothing to do so hopefully this will be an attraction for them." As well as selling crafts, the Murcotts are hoping to start a small information centre in the shop. If the business is a success, Kevin plans to build new shop premises in National Park in several years time.
