New Plunket nurse is appointed

After months of extensive advertising in both the national media and nursing journals, the Waimarino Plunket Society has found a new Plunket nurse — right on its own doorstep! Carol Harford, who along with her husband Keith, runs a hardware store in Raetihi, has successfully applied for the position and will commence her training in August at Palmerston North. Until then, Mrs Harford will be frantically studying medical books to catch up on her nursing knowledge as it has been 1 8 years since she nursed at Wellington Hospital. "It wasn't until I read the Waimarino Bulletin's report on a recent public meeting that I realised the local Plunket Society was willing to train somebody to take up the position. Prior to that I thought they wanted somebody already trained as a Plunket nurse. "I immediately rang Diana Mcllwrick to apply for the position." An interview was arranged with the Society's director of nursing, Mrs Ann Cressey, area representative, Joan Hunt, and relieving Plunket Nurse, Miss Nancy Frampton. The interview, held at Wanganui after the branch

meeting, was a successful one for Mrs Harford, and brought to an end the lengthy search by the Waimarino Plunket Society. The training course takes 16 weeks with Mrs Harford being paid $28 a week to cover her travelling, accommodation and food expenses. Any other costs are to be met by her personally and although she has the support of her husband and family, she is under no illusions that

it could be an expensive exercise. At the Ohakune Plunket A.G.M. held last week, the meeting applauded Mrs Harford's appointment and resolved to discuss at the next committee meeting, ways of raising money to assist her while she is in Palmerston North. It is anticipated that Mrs Harford will be ready to commence her duties by December.
