Barley grass still causing concern
Although the control of barley grass in the Waimarino was subsidised during the period 1978-1983, the incidence of reinfestation in some areas is causing concern. It is estimated that some 90% control of most infestations has been achieved during the past 6 years but it is
the later germinating plants, which are not visible until in the seed head stage when it is then too late.to spray, that are causing the problem of reinfestation. Those farmers who are dedicated enough to pull out and destroy these seeding plants are certainly winning the battle, but too many are
leaving these plants to seed. The reduction in export value of lamb pelts attributed to barley grass seed has • been estimated at $500,000 p a and it has been proved that lambs exposed to barley grass seed can suffer reduction in live-weight gains, which can be as high as 6Skg per lamb. The total cost of barley
grass in terms of lost overseas exchange is estimated to be at least $3 million a year and could well be a good deal higher. Eradication is still the aim of the- Waimarino District Noxious Plants Authority and control measures will be enforced throughout the atea until this is achieved.
