Newly completed $¼m Mormon chapel opens in Waiouru

The first services were held recently in the newly completed chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Ruanui Street, Waiouru. The chapel was crowded for the morning service with many visitors from Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and elsewhere. including President James Dunlop, the Stake President from Palmerston North. Local church leader, Clifford Stockman, conducted the meetings which were followed by lunch at the marae. The $250,000 Modulock building has been built from the funds of New Zealand Church members, and is the first Mormon chapel in the Waiouru area. Many of the previous Presidents were in attendance including President Smith, now residing in Hamilton, who commented

that because of the transient nature of the church membership in Waiouru, being Army personnel and moving from place to place, much of

the work in building up the church membership in this area had been done by people who have since moved on.
