Tumblers wash their way to $400
Four hundred dollars was raised by 35 Turoa Tumblers who washed cars in both Raetihi and Ohakune last Saturday. The children, aided by about 20 adults, spent all morning and most of the afternoon washing, waxing and painting the wheels of cars and trucks, all for just $3 each. The wash ended with a huge water fight according to the Tumblers' coach, Mr Glyn Hubbard. "The kids all worked really well and were exhausted after it, but I'm sure they all really enjoyed it,"he said. The money was raised to aid Glyn in travelling to Australia to manage the New Zealand grade five boys gymnastics team. The group left last Saturday for Adelaide where they are spending a week competing against South Australia. They will then travel to Canberra where they will train at the Australian Institute of Sport. From Canberra they will go by train to Sydney for sightseeing and shopping and arrive home on 21st May. Glyn believes the Tumblers will greatly benefit from the coaching skills he will learn while in Australia. "There are top class coaches at the Institute of Sport and the men's coach in
Sydney coached the gymnastics team which won a gold medal at the Olympics last year, so it will be very worthwhile." Glyn says he will be able to bring back new ideas for training the Tumblers as the Australians are more ad-
vanced due to the fact that the sport receives an $8 million per year grant, whereas gymnastics in New Zealand receives only $25,000. Glyn is managing a team of eight boys, all under 15, from Wellington, Napier, Rotorua and Auckland.
