Whakapapa skifield news
This year at Whakapapa, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts have geared their prices to encourage family skiing. The cost of a child's day pass ($8) has remained the same as last year, to encourage families to ski together. RAL is also encouraging more people to ski mid-week by offering discounted packages on weekdays.
A new service is also being started at Whakapapa for skiers who wish to ski more remote parts of Mt Ruapehu and Tongariro National Park. Plateau Guides Ltd will be taking skiers to more out of the way parts of the mountain. The company's guides all have a good knowledge of mountain conditions. Whakapapa have a pho-
tography competition this year and are looking for prints that show people having fun on and off the slopes. Prizes are RAL passes and a plaque from Kodak. Over the summer, permanent staff have been painting, checking and repairing the lifts. Top O' the Bruce ski rentals have been busy repairing skis and bindings. Craig Spiess will return this year to direct the Chateau Ski School and once the field opens, regular lessons will be held at 10.45am and 1.45pm every day. Private lessons can also be arranged.
