Ohakune railway bridge dismantled

After years of sterling service, the Ohakune railway bridge was dismantled at the weekend. The Main Trunk Line now passes over a new bridge, which has been built over the past few months alongside the old one. A sixty tonne crane, which came to Ohakune from Palmerston North, was used to dismantle the bridge. After the bridge was dismantled, relieving area construction manager, Mr Bill Musson, said there is still a considerable amount of work to be done in the area, including landscaping around the track and the lowering of the Mountain Road where it runs underneath the bridge, to allow more clearance. The road is also to be realigned to cut out the existing corner. The Northerner was the first train to travel over the new bridge on Sunday night.
