Children's library run by volunteers
Waiouru children's library is different from most libraries, not only because it caters especially for young children, but also because it is run solely by volunteers and buys its books without the assistance of the library service. The library has been operating since 1962.
Mrs Diane Jordan has been secretary/librarian there for two years and has worked at the library for three years. She organises the roster for volunteers, the purchasing of books, attends to paperwork and does her share of time as librarian. Books are mainly bought through an agent passing through Waiouru as it's not possible for Mrs Jordan to travel to cities to purchase the variety of books that the library requires. Mrs Jordan says the library caters mainly for children who don't go to school. but many primary school pupils use the library in addition to their school library. "We lend out books to children from six months on, lots of the little ones just sit and look at the pictures. Very few books get ripped or damaged considering how many young children are using them." The library also has a section for parents, on childbirth and bringing up children. The library is open Monday to Friday from 3pm to
4pm and Wednesday morning from 10am to Ilam. Volunteers work one hour per week each. Mrs Jordan finds it difficult working out a roster because she says, "just as 1 have it all worked out, someone is posted elsewhere." At present the library is in need of
volunteers. The library survives by fund-raising activities such as sponsored film shows in the eamp. Waiouru Children's Library also receives financial help from the Waiouru community, the Rangitiki County Council and from the army.
