Community Leaders column — in verse!

The fifth local authority leader to contribute to the Community Leaders' Column, Mr Marshal Gebbie of . National Park, has chosen verse to express his appreciation of the community in which he lives. He writes: — In a world where overnight borrowing costs 750% per annum; , Where the savings of a working life guarantee no security for a comfortable retirement; Where in the urban environment rape, violent assault and armed robbery go unremarked in daily newspapers; In this world where the race of technology is measured in terms of hours not weeks; The dizzying, spiraling confusion of rushing insanity called progress; The madness which has become modern life. Renders the serenity of brown thistledown in a golden sunset; The slow plodding home of the shepherd's horse, with tired dog at heel; Blue woodsmoke from an old brick chimney against Ruapehu's blue majesty; The frosty clink of early morning milk bottles; And a neighbour's quiet nodding smile in Carroll St. These simple things make our township of National Park — the most wonderful place in the world!
