One hundred in fun run
Although not as big as the recent Auckland Round the Bays events, Sunday's 'Family Fun Run' was just as much fun for the scores of people who took part. The event was m two sections, four kilometres and eight kilometres, with all competitors starting at Ohakune's 'big carrot' at I0.30am. All ages and both sexes were represented amongst the runners, with several mothers taking their children with them in prams. For those who preferred to leave their youngsters behind, a creche service was operated free of charge in the nearby Lions Den. The first person back to the carrot was young Arron McCann, a competitor in the boys class, who completed the four kilometre course in 16 minutes, 55 seconds — over a minute faster than the first man to
complete four kilometres. First home in the eight kilometre event was Chris Thrupp, who was well clear of the field. Second place was taken by Kenneth Alvisson, Ohakune's newest citizen. Kenneth, who was born in Sweden, became a New Zealand citizen during a short ceremony conducted by Ohakune Mayor, Mr Bill Taylor, at the end of February. Kevin Dowman was the third eight kilometre runn^r to return to the carrot. Robin Thompson was the first lady to finish the eight kilometre event, in a time of 35 minutes, 58 seconds. This would have put her in 21st place in the men's class. Another good run was by Mark Vincent, the first boy home, with a time of 31 minutes, 45 seconds, putting him in eighth place overall in the eight kilometre race. Spot prizes were awarded to competitors after the race
— two of the more unusual being a lamb and a pig! Competitors also enjoyed a barbecue, after completing the course, which helped them get their strength back after their exertions! The full list of finishers, with times, was as follows:
