Fun at the Waimarino Rodeo

Despite a smaller than average crowd, last weekend's 36th annual Waimarino Rodeo, was a roaring success. Last year's event was marred by heavy rain, but this year the sun shone strongly and the rodeo proved to be a great day out for all the family. Over $900 in prize money was won during the day, by rodeo riders from all over the country. The rodeo is on the national points award circuit and attracted the country's top riders. One local girl — Bernice Frost of Raetihi — competed against the visitors

and finished just out of the money in" fifth place in the open 'round the barrels' event. The one purely 'local' event — round the barrels, horses versus motorcycles, was won by the horse team, consisting of Bernice Frost, Kathy McLain and Enid Windle. The narrowly defeated motorcycle team members were Michael and Grant Brightand Robin Robinson. Despite the smaller than average crowd, $1,900 was taken at the gate, which covered prize money and the Waimarino Rodeo organisation's costs. Results were as follows:

Open Events Bareback, purse money $340: I st Dave Early, 2nd T. Tauariki; 3rd, equal Ron Parsons and Les White. Calf roping, purse money $520: lst Ian Nicol, 2nd Nigel Westlake, 3rd Laurie Latta.
