Electricity outage

A stone-crusher, being pulled behind a wagon, caused an electricity failure in Ohakune and Rangataua on Tuesday morning. The stone-crusher was being towed on the railway overbridge to the Mangateitei Road when it pulled down an electricity pole. The accident caused the power to go off in Ohakune and Rangataua shortly before 8am. Power supply was quickly restored by the King Country Electric Power Board. Ohakune was back to normal by 8.25am and Rangataua by 8.45am. As well as putting the electricity off, the broken 11,000 volt power-line caused damage to the railways' communication system. The stone-crusher was being moved by Hurlstones at the time the accident occurred — and the company now faces a bill to cover the cost of repairing the damage.
