Thirty years ago
One of the most spectacular and successful balls held at Ohakune for some tijme was organised by the Mountain Road Association this week in 1955. Twenty-six Maori debutantes were presented to Mrs H. Te Heuheu of Taumarunui and Mr J. Takarangi of Wanganui. The whole function was well organised and presented and an indication was given that the ball could become an annual function. The hall was tastefully decorated by Mr N. Nicholson of Karioi with the floral arrangements by Mrs M. Jenkins and Mrs K. Huddleston. President of the Mountain Road Association, Mr M. Gould and the Mayor and Mayoress of Ohakune, Mr and Mrs F. A. Martin were on the dais. After the speeches the debutantes filed off the stage and were met by their escorts for the debutantes waltz. Music was played by Miss Pat Punch. Proceeds from the ball were for the 'Mountain Road' candidates in the Ohakune Queen Carnival. ★ ★ ★ It was announced this week thirty years ago that the Raetihi R.S. A. would be vacating the hall above the, Ritz Tea Rooms on 31st March.
An auction sale of the contents of the hall was planned. ★ ★ ★ Mr Nigel Barclay, M.A., first assistant and head of the English Department of Horo whenua College was appointed by the Wanganui Education Board as headmaster of the Ohakune High School, in March '55. Mr Barclay played senior rugby and cricket and was a member of the Waimate and Horowhenua Rugby Unions. In addition, he was a keen
chess player, held the rank of Major in the army and commanded the Horowhenua College Cadet Corps. ★ ★ ★ Captain McFarlane arrived in. Raetihi this week thirty years ago with a troupe of dogs, monkeys and miniature ponies, which he intended to show off at the annual rodeo. Thousands of people were expected to make their way to the showgrounds for the rodeo.
* ★ ★ The latest recordings offered for sale in Boyd's of Raetihi thirty years ago included: Shake, Rattle and Roll by Bill Haley and the Comets, Marching through the - Homeland, Marching through the Commonwealth by the Band of the Coldstream Guards, The Old Rugged Cross by Roy Rogers, We Stood at the Altar by Slim Whitman, and finally, Are My Ears on Straight by Spike Jones and his City Slickers!
