Great-grandmother is top gardener!
Eighty-three-year-old great grandmother, Mrs Ethel 'Marty' Martin, is Ohakune's top gardener. Mrs Martin, widow of former Ohakune Mayor, Mr Frank Martin, has won the Garden Circle Cup for the best garden in the town. When the cup was awarded for the first time last year, Mrs Martin of Miro Street was runner-up to Mr and Mrs E. D. Whale of Mangawhero Terrace, but this time the tables were turned, with Mrs Martin first and Mr and Mrs Whale runners-up. Mr 'Blue' Forest of Lee Street, who was also a runner-up last year, was again a runner-up in this year's contest. The final judging of gardens was carried out in February and points allocated were added to the points awarded in the spring to give an overall winner. Mrs Martin, who has been a member of the Garden Club for twenty-five years, will hold the cup for one year and will also receive a prize of shrubs of her own choice for her garden. Each of the runners-up will receive prizes of garden shrubs of their choice. The prizes were donated by the Ohakune Garden Circle, the Ohakune Borough Council and Kunikraft Garden Court, Ohakune. Highly commended was Mrs Christine Hall's garden in Arawa Street. Judges for the spring competition were Mrs Carol
Hitchcock, Mrs Eileen Clarke and Mrs Jackie Murray. The summer competition
was judged by Mrs Carol Hitchcock, Mrs - Eileen Clarke and Mrs Jean MacFarlane.
