Ruapehu College Sports Day results and pictures

The annual Ruapehu College Athletics Sports were held last week over two days. Good student participatien necessitated close to a full day of preliminary ~ track and field events on Tuesday 5th March to sort out "the wheat from the chaff. " Strong headwinds hindered runners in the track events and prevented fast times, but there was evidence that the finals on the following day would be keenly contested. Strong winds continued for a time on the morning of the finals but the wind gradually decreased and caused few problems for competitors. The efficiency of the technological age was very apparent on finals day. Officials armed with walkie talkies abounded. A public address system ensured that announcements and instructions could be heard all over the field — and over most of Ohakune! Oblivious to the wonders of modern technology, competitors ran, jumped and threw their way through a wide variety of events with varying degrees of success. The shorter track events were characterised by the number of close and exciting

finishes. And if the longer events were sometimes short on competitors, those that ran these events did so with courage and determination. No records were broken in the track events but many competitors performed with distinction. Notable amongst these were: D. McDonnell who won both the senior boys 400m and 800m races; L. Davies who won the senior girls 200m and 400m (although being the sole competitor in the Jatter probablyhelped!),T. Waara who won the senior boys 100m and 200m races; R. Evans with wins in the intermediate girls 200m and 400m events; S. McElroy with success in the junior girls 100m and 200m; and J. Haitana in the junior boys 100m and 800m. Two records were set in the field events however. T. Te Moana added 1.95 metres to the intermediate girls javelin record by throwing 24.47 metres — the old record had stood since 1970. She also won the high and long jumps in her division and R. Evans added .05 metres to the intermediate girls triple jump with her 9.49 metre result. Many others performed creditably and many records

were threatened without being broken. The staff versus seventh form relay provided an interesting spectacle when the staff, despite the determined efforts of several runners to let the students. catch up, still carhe out convincing winners — age is no barrier to success. The final event of the day saw the school house captains take on parents in a

relay. This time youth proved triumphant and somewhat devious — one parent was heard to wonder how his opponent managed to trip him up when she was ten yards in front! A fitting end to an enjoyable and successful day. Full results were as follows: Senior boys long jump: 1st T. Waara, 2nd J. Dennison, 3rd W.
