Good response from employers

There has been a good response from employers in the region to Ruapehu College's request for help with their newly launched 'life skills' course. The course is aimed at bridging the gap between school and employment for youngsters who are not coping well with high school. The college needed the help of employers who were wiliing to take pupils two days per week to give them experience in an employment environment. All eleven youngsters on the course have now found employers wiliing to give them work experience, with

a further ten employers ready to take other youngsters, if the course is expanded. The pupils are working in the forestry industry, farming, doing hotel work, helping in a workshop, a library and a cafe. The course is being run by a new teacher at the college, Derek Beisley, who visited all the youngsters at their' places of work this week, with college principal, Mike Warbrick. After the tour, Mr Warbrick said he was very pleased with the new course and the way the youngsters were performing. The overall aim of the course is to equip students for "successful individual living and employment." Potential early school leavers are encouraged to remain at school to gain extra skills
