Thirty years ago
Sister Thelma Thornton of the Waimarino Hospital was farewelled this week thirty years ago by the Raetihi Athletic and Football Club, prior to taking up an appointment at the Green Lane Hospital, Auckland. Thelma was greatly in-, terested in the sporting world and was the genial secretary of the Tongariro Tramping Club. ★ ★ ★ Warm weather together with light rain proved ideal for mushrooms in earlv March 1955 and large quantities" of this delicacy were being sent to Auckland from the Waimarino by rail. ★ ★ ★ At a meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council, the resignation of Mrs W. Evans from the position of caretaker of the Centennial Rest Room was received. Mrs Evans had held the position for over eleven years and her resignation was received and accepted with regret. Mrs M. McGilivray was appointed to fill the vacancy. ★ ★ ★ The first monthly meeting of the Raetihi Garden Club for 1955 was held on
February 24th in the Druids Hall. Mrs H. Donnelly presided over a good attendance of members. Mr Ross, a member of the Ohakune High School staff, spoke on his recent tour of the British Isles and the Continent. While in England he visited the Chelsea flower
show and Kew Gardens. Competitions for the afternoon were won by the following: — Best bloom: Mrs McGilvrey lst, Mrs T. Brown 2nd. Dahlia: Mrs E. Punch lst, Mrs T. Brown 2nd. Shrub: Mrs T. Brown lst, Mrs Dobson 2nd. Arrangement of gladioli: Mrs Dobson.
★ ★ ★ After having been largely absent for most of the summer to date, wasps were once again making their presence felt in Ohakune. Housewives making jam found their homes invaded by the pests, but reports of stingings were few. Steady rain had driven the insects from their nests.
