Maypole a hit with kids
The recently constructed maypole at Ohakune Primary School has proved to be a roaring success with pupils. The idea for a maypole as part of the playground equipment came from teacher Cheryl Quinn. She wrote to Hauraki School in Auckland, which has a maypole, to find out who designed and constructed it. Amazingly, she discovered it was an Ohakune resident — Mr Max Martin — who had constructed Hauraki's maypole. Mr Martin agreed to make a similar maypole for
Ohakune Primary School and the Sue family, of Ohakune, paid for its construction. The maypole has proved so popular that a timetable has been drawn up to make sure members of each class
get a turn. Acting principal, Mrs Moreen Hancock, said that senior pupils organise the queues which form to swing on the new novelty, and all the children using it have been well-behaved.
