Records fall in swimming tournament
Waiouru swimming club won the Wanganui Centre Country Clubs Championships heid in Marton last weekend, for the first time in the club's history. The club also established five new records during the championships. Success for the Waiouru swimmers couldn't have come at a better time for the club, as two of their four coaches, Mrs Judy Aitken and Mrs Carol Trotter, will be leaving the area in April and the championship was the last major event they prepared the team for.
The club trains twice a week at the Waiouru pool. The remaining two coaches, Leon Smith and Bill Farmer, will be continuing the good work when Judy and Carol leave. The star of the championships was Michelle Akurangi who broke three records for the Waiouru club. Swimming in the classes for 14 and 1 5-year-oid girls, Michelle set new records in the 100m freestyle, 100m backstrokeand lOOmbreaststroke events. . Dion Te Miha set a new record in the 50m breaststroke event for 10 and 1 1-year-old boys. And it was a double
family effort in the relay race when brothers Janie, Dion and Greg Te Miha teamed up with Adam and Bill Farmer to win the event in a
new record time. The relay success was even more exciting for the club, as it was only the first time Waiouru had put a
team in for the event. The Marton club swimmers were runners-up in the championship, with Raetihi third.
The competing clubs' points totals were: Waiouru 152, Marton 148, Raetihi 111, Hunterville 16 and Taihape 8.
