Jean and Vicky prepare for winter
Now that summer is drawing to an end, local businesses are already preparing for the busy winter season. One of those businesses is the Mountain View Motel, Ohakune, which is now under new management. Jean Higgins, with the help of her niece Vicky, is currently replacing walls in the motel, replacing showers, developing the garden and will soon be re-wallpapering and re-carpeting. Before coming to Ohakune in November to manage the motel, Jean spent ten years working in saies for Qantas Jetabout in Sydney.
She also worked as a shore excursions offiCer for Cruiselines in Australia and as a consultant for Newman's Toursin Auckland. "L'm looking to see this business really work," she says, "and we're really making an effort to clean it up." Vicky came to town from Titirangi in Auckland, where she completed her University Entrance year in
1984. She plans to start a hotel management course by correspondence this year and believes the practical experience of working in the motel will be of help with the course, The new restaurant in the building is called 'Settlers' and has an appropriate rustic atmosphere. Jean hopes to have a BY O
licence granted shortly. A spa pool at the motel is now working and is available for the public's use as well as guests. Jean plans to have the majority of the renovations finished by April, as the motel is fully booked during that month. Further renovations which are planned for next year include a new roof.
