Ohakune's new station master

Ohakune Railway Station once again has a permanent station master. He is Fred Mulligan, from Wellington. Although he did not even know where Ohakune was when he applied for thejob, Fred, his wife and daughter have settled into the 'quiet life' quite well in the three weeks they have been here. "It's a lot different from Wellington but weYe enjoying the change," he says, "I've worked shifts for three years so it's good to get back into a regular routine again."

Fred was a counter clerk at the ferry terminal in Wellington prior to coming to Ohakune. The job of station master is the next step up the promotional ladder from his previous post. As station master, Fred attends to the paper work in the railway office and generally ensures the smooth running of the station. Ohakune's last permanent station master, Stewart Van der Wiel, left Ohakune in December 1983. Since then there have been several people in charge of the station on a temporary basis.
