OWHANGO LODGE
OPENING
OFFICIAL OPENING SATURDAY FEBRUARY 23
It was a full house at the Owhango Lodge on Saturday when King Country MP, Jim Bolger, re-opened the building. Pam and Mike Emberton welcomed people from all over the King country — and from further afield — to the reopening ceremony, which was followed by a hangi in the Lodge' s grounds. Y I After cutting the tape to officially open the two bars and bottle-store, Mr Bolger congratulated Mike and Pam on "recovering from what must have been a disastrous experience," to re-build and re-open the Lodge. Mike and Pam took over running the hotel in November 1983 and after moving in with their two children, Cheree and Kylie, planned to carry out a long-term restoration programme. However, the Lodge was gutted by fire last year and, as a result, they decided to do all their improvements at once as so much repair work had to be done to the building anyway.
The inside of the hotel is now tastefully decorated in mauve, pink and cream. Soft and comfortable seats and background music help to give the lounge a family atmosphere. Mr Bolger commented that he had carried out quite a number of official openings since becoming a member of parliament, but the Owhango Lodge was his first official re-opening of a pub! The last opening ceremony he performed in Owhango was "something a little different," the King Country MP commented — "the town's water supply!" It was that water supply which prevented the Lodge being com-% pletely destroyed in last year' s fire. The town had just changed from bore water to mains water when the fire broke out, and the ready supply of water enabled firemen to save part of the building. Although the Owhango Lodge is now completely modern, the retention of part of the old building enables it to keep some of its former character.
