Language nest
Forty people attended the opening of Raetihi's first Te Kohunga Reo, or Maori Language Nest, at the Raetihi Marae on Monday. A welcome and greeting was given by Maori elder, Tanewhaorangi Gray. The Mayor of Raetihi, Mr Garrick Workman, expessed his delight at having Te Kohunga Reo in Raetihi. He also stressed the need for the young Maoris in Raetihi to do something positive for the town and help Te Kohunga Reo. Te Kohunga Reo will be taken by Stella Mills and will be run along the same lines as the Ohakune and Waiouru groups. Stella has the help of two PEP workers. They will help to supervise the children and are learning Maori themselves to enable them to help teach the children. Any children aged from one to four years can join Te Kohunga Reo to learn the Maori language.
