Changes planned at Waiouru Museum

Now that Major Peter Nelson has been at the Waiouru Military Museum for several weeks, he admits the job of directing the museum is much more hectic than he'd expected. But the Major, who was formerly the officer commanding the regional training company at Burnam, Christchurch, has many ideas to improve the museum. "I see the place as a business — my aim is to make the place pay for itself." The museum has always run at a loss and Major Nelson believes that the

place cannot be improved until it covers costs. To do this, he plans to advertise much more and increase the number of seats in the cafeteria to allow three bus tours at a time to eat there. At present the cafeteria is filled by two bus loads of people, so there is often no seating for private people wanting a snack. The museum shop is soon to be remodelled to carry more stock. "We intend to double the range and cater for local people as well as visitors — prices should be very competitive." Major Nelson also plans to begin an educational

programme for schools beginning next month. School groups will be given a guided tour of the museum, and if required discussions with an emphasis on a particular theme will be arranged. The school parties will also be able to lunch in the museum cafe and swim in the camp pool. Major Nelson believes the package will be suitable for both primary and secondary school pupils.
