Thirty years ago
This week in 1955, Mr J. Pearson of Raetihi, stepped on a thin crust of earth, missing his footing and fell into a pool of boiling water. The accident happened while he was tramping at Ketetahi.
Mr Pearson suffered very severg burns to his body as a result of the tragic accident. ★ ★ ★ A Salmonella outbreak amongst sheep on a farm in the Waimarino district, was causing concern this week thirty years ago.
Livestock Instructor, Mr W. R. Eaton, was called out to the farm to deal with the outbreak. At that time Salmonella was considered to be a fairly serious disease but has not caused the same number of losses amongst flocks as
Pulpy Kidney, Facial Ezcema and Hogget Mortality. ★ ★ ★ During the first five days of the school year in 1955, 36 pupils were enrolled at the Raetihi School, 24 of them being new entrants. Since the end of 1954, 45 pupils had left the school, 29 to go to secondary school and 16 to other primary schools. The roll for the school was 322, up on 1954's figure of 316. ★ ★ ★ Remaining on the subject of Raetihi School, despite repeated advertisements for at least a year, no application had been received for a woman's teaching position at the school. "There is today a general shortage of women teachers — almost entirely due to the greater loss today owing to earlier marriage," a newspaper report said at the time. One family in Raetihi had already offered to board a teacher should the continuing advertising prove successful. The fact that board had been included in the job offer "should definitely assist in staffing our school," the staff thought.
