Tour of Waimarino forest
Eighty people attended a tour of the Waimarino forest on Waitangi Day. The tour was organised by the Raetihi-Ohakune Rotary Club in conjunction with Winstone Afforestation. Individuals drove their own cars through the forest and stopped at places of interest along the way. The forestry guides Craig Walker, Russell Flavell and Tom Brummer showed the groups of visitors some of the thousands of hectares of
radiata pine trees in various stages of growth. The forest covers 16,000 hectares of land, of which 10,000 will eventually be planted. The remaining land will be used for recreation. The main objective of Winstone Afforestation is to
grow radiata pine to produce sawlogs. But some trees planted in the Waimarino Forest will be felled for pulpwood on a rotation of 10 to 15 years. Winstone Afforestation also uses their land for livestock grazing and re-
creation. The tour was also taken to Winstones breeding pens, where various species of birds are being bred for release into the forest. The visitors ended their tour with a barbecue at the Ameku Wildlife reserve.
