New job
Raetihi Borough Council is to advertise for an extra staff member, as work schemes in the town are getting behind schedule. In addition, Town Clerk Mrs Hope Vaughan is to contact the Department of Labour to ask if Wanganui PEP workers can be sent to Raetihi as there are no unemployed people in the town who can be used for PEP work. Chairman of the works committee, Mr Ken Summerhays, said the works staff had been undermanned over Christmas and was now behind with its work. The full council agreed to advertise for one full time staff member to assist the Borough Foreman who currently is only assisted by one temporary labourer. Mayor, Mr Garrick Workman stated that many local authorities were having a lot of work done in their towns by PEP workers, but Raetihi had been unable to get even one from the Labour Department. The council agreed to try to get PEP workers from Wanganui. Mr Workman commented, "We should try to get some before this Government ends the scheme."
