Stuart backs a winner with Angora goats
Stuart Roke of Ohakune made a wise choice when he invested in Angora goats, as their value is on the up and up due to a world shortage of mohair. Stuart has fifteen purebred Angora goats and about 40 cross-breeds.
The goats are shorn in January and then again in August and the wool is sold for an average price of $20 a kilo. It is exported through a mohair pool in Pukekohe. The price of just one goat can be between $1,000 and $50,000 — with one buck changing hands for $52,000
at last week's national sale in Hamilton! Angora goats are not the best breed for milking, although the Rokes also keep several Saneen goats, which are good milkers. Stuart is presently holidaying in the South Island and his parents Ian and Ann Roke have been in charge of the herd.
